I have been a fan of Russian born, New York raised folk goddess Regina Spektor for quite a few years now. She is a talented musician, songwriter and musician who has a large catalogue of music for such a young lassie. I love that she uses what are considered unorthodox vocal techniques – such as exaggerated vocalization, playing with pronunciations, buzzing for an entire verse.
Her songs are typically not autobiographical in nature, which is kind of unusual for a singer songwriter. Not that it matters. She has a vivid imagination and is able to draw from that to create great songs such as the song above – That Time . I have seen her twice in concert – and am thrilled that she played this the last time I saw her. I nearly peed my pants – I was so happy to hear it.
If you have the inclination I highly recommend her version of Real Love – it is pretty much made of awesome.
