Concert Review: Adele

10 Aug

In a previous version of this blog, I wrote reviews. Concerts, movies, books, TV shows, award shows even. Whatever was there I would comment on. Obviously I stopped. I figured no-one really cares what I think about a given Concert, TV show, book or Movie.

Then I saw Adele in concert last night and everything changed. I want to shout how I feel about this concert from the roof tops. It was undeniably fantastic. Singularly amazing. In a word, last night was spectacular. The concert was initially upgraded from the Commodore Ballroom to the Orpheum (three times the capacity) and then rescheduled from May 31st due to what sounds like a nasty case of laryngitis. Was it worth the wait. Hells yes it was.

It was spectacular. From the second her voice rang out from behind the draping for the opening song – Hometown Glory – until she walked off the stage after  the final encore – Someone Like You. Spectacular. Her voice has recovered and as the show last night was the first of the new tour it is in top form.

The 23 year old chanteuse has been fairly vocal about her nerves. What I love about her is how she handles her performance anxiety. Some people get all awkward and quiet. Adele is not like that at all. Instead she talks to much and rambles and laughs and tells inappropriate stories. She is unashamed of telling the audience a story that makes her seem silly or foolish in any way. Which is exactly what I do to mask my nerves. I love it.

And can I talk about her laugh for just a minute? It is not really a laugh so much as a cackle. And it is awesome. And so fucking cute. Watch the first bit of the video below to see the cackle. Adele is a great storyteller. Fans know that her albums are about two specific ex’s in her life. And while the names of these douchebags are kept private, she has no problem telling small anecdotes about them and the song. Girlfriend is also funny. Naming her hair pieces, how she is finally wearing colour and heels (she is becoming a lady don’t you know). She knows how to tell a story and has an easy way of talking that made all 2800 of us feel like we were total BFF’s.

The stories, the laugh, how gorgeous she looked. That was all the icing on the cake to that voice. That voice is flawless. And even when it is not technically flawless, it is. Her voice is pure and soulful and rich and so very very phenomenal. Honestly, there are not enough superlatives to describe how talented  this girl is. 23 years old. I cannot fathom the talent that just oozes out of her.

Every song was fantastic. Her tribute to Amy Winehouse – Make you Feel my Love – was heartfelt and beautiful. The dedication of the song Hometown Glory to the turmoil occurring in London was expected and fitting. This song is her lovesong to London and last night she made her feelings known – stating that the city was “under attack from a pack of idiots” Yea they are.  Rolling in the Deep as the first song of the encore had every one on their feet. Frankly, to close the show with the haunting and devastating Someone Like You was odd. Would have seemed more logical to have us leave on a high instead of sobbing in each others arms. But it worked. Everything worked. There is only thing I would change. There should be an Adele concert every night. Every single fucking night.
